The Diploma of Creative Industries (WDCI)

 

Courses

The Diploma of Creative Industries is a new one-year course that offers a broad introduction to the creative industries in the areas of Visual Art and Digital Media.

 

The Diploma focuses on developing a generalist knowledge and broad range of skills in the creative industries. Key features of the Diploma of include practical and work-based creative projects incorporating the latest technologies and common fundamentals in the arts industries.

 

The visual art subjects (painting and drawing) are taught in a shared studio environment while the digital media subjects are delivered in computer labs with the current industry software. The theoretical studies are offered as lectures and tutorials. A unique feature of the program is additional language, literacy and numeracy skills to equip students for academic learning.  

 

The Diploma is particularly suited to students who may wish to pathway into the second year of a relevant bachelor degree such as the Bachelor of Creative Arts Industries at VU. It gives them a broad introduction to the discipline and allows for further specialisation in the 2nd and 3rd year of the degree.

 

The Diploma is offered to local and international students and all our classes take place at our spectacular Flinders Street campus.

 

The course can be studied Full Time or Part Time.

 

Full Time

The full time program is 20 hours per week over a year commencing in early February and ending in mid November.

 

Part Time

For the majority of part time students, the Diploma would involve 2 days of study per week over 2 years.

  • New Perspectives in Painting

 

Digital Media subjects:

  • Design for Digital Media
  • Sound and Video for Digital Media

 

Tuition

All our teachers are practicing artists who are employed one or two days a week and maintain active art careers. All are committed to education and sharing their skills and expertise with students.


Assessment

Assessment is based on both practical activities (production of artwork)
and academic assignments and presentations.

 

Where could this lead you?

Successful completion of the Diploma leads into the second year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts Industries at Victoria University. The degree course provides further opportunities for creative arts practice, industry placements and partnership projects to enhance career outcomes.


Students who opt to pursue an employment opportunity and not continue their studies into the second year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts Industries, will acquire a broad range of knowledge and skills relevant in the creative industries, to commence a successful career.
Students may pursue opportunities in the cultural and creative industries as an art producer/art practitioner, entrepreneur or manager.

 

Credit for previous study or experience

We can offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credits for skills and knowledge gained through formal or informal study, work or life experience.

Fees and Kits

HECS funded places are available for students. Please contact the School of Creative Industries for the fee structure for 2012. In addition, students will need to purchase art materials during the year which may amount to approximately $500.

 

Scholarships

All students can apply for a $1000 scholarship to support their studies.

Entry Requirements

Full time and Part time applicants must apply through VTAC, entry will be based on an ATAR score. Applications can also be submitted via a TAFE Direct Application form to the School of Creative Industries. Direct applicants may be required to attend and an interview and will be advised in mid Jan after the 1st Round of VTAC. Late applicants should contact us at ci@vu.edu.au or phone 9919 1583.
