Music
Graduates
Many of our graduates, through networks developed as a result of their
studies at Victoria University, have established themselves
in a range of rewarding and stimulating careers in the music
industry.
Careers in Music
The music industry is diverse, exciting and rewarding. In order to secure a career, students need to have
an edge over others.
They need to learn how to promote themselves, establish and
expand their networks, be aware of the latest technologies
and have the hands on experience required in their chosen field. Students
at Victoria University are given the opportunity to gain these
skills.
Workshops, Projects, Events and Field Trips
There are regular activities that involve all streams of study in
the music department - from performance events and workshops with
professionals, to seminars and visits to a wide range of production
facilities. Some of the highlights include: a
workshop session with Internationally renown
compose/performer David Bridie, a
workshop with local producer and in-demand
studio engineer Matt Voigt, an improvisation
workshop with guitarist Steve Magnusson, a performance
workshop with innovative trumpeter Peter Knight and a very
special evening with legendary engineer Michael Stavrou (also an incredible magician!). Events have included: industry showcase
and awards nights at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, The Espy in St Kilda and Revolver in Prahran, a 3-day
music industry conference and numerous other gigs at
pub/club venues. Field trips have included: Metropolis Audio, ABC Southbank, Labsonics, the CSIRO reverb
chambers and anechoic room, Telstra Dome, Crown Casino, Her Majestys Theatre, the Regent Theatre, Rod Laver Arena and many more.
Industry Placements
In addition to the events and activities mentioned above, the Diploma of Music (Technical Production) students are required to
organise and attend an industry placement in their chosen area of
specialisation. Organisations that have placed students
include: System Sound, Cavalier studios, Alan Eaton studios,
Johnston audio, Music and Effects, Labsonics,
Triple R,
Open Channel, freelance industry professionals and many more.
